Spices, a continental restaurant that juices up the menu with some
Jamaican cuisine, has moved into the Grand Avenue spot long-occupied by
Principessa. The new, moderately priced eatery stands out with jerk
chicken but also prepares plump, well-seasoned crab cakes. On Friday
and Saturday, specials include mild, curried goat with rice and
vegetables; and oxtail with rice and peas. The kitchen prepares pastas,
steak, short ribs, lobster-crab risotto and a fine starter of "sugar
and spice" shrimp, a sweet-sour appetizer. And the house cheesecake
stars rum-soaked raisins. Very friendly, very good service. Spices is
at 1084 Grand Ave.; Baldwin, 516-489-7460.
